This week we are pleased to announce Hannah Christianson, a senior at Brookfield East High School, as our Superhero of the Week!
Hannah is a dedicated student and athlete who strives to be a leader in everything she does. When outside of her Honors and AP classes, Hannah combines her love of sports with a very personal understanding of individuals with special needs through the Unified Sports Program.
Unified Sports is a program spearheaded by Hannah as a means of allowing students with and without disabilities to play sports together in a safe and friendly environment. Hannah was inspired by a similar program in Massachusetts and set out to create one for her own school. She aspires to spread the Unified Sports Program throughout the state of Wisconsin!
Of all people, Hannah may be in a unique position to understand the struggles of disabled Americans. Hannah has two younger brothers, one of whom has special needs. Over the years she has witnessed his struggles firsthand and has contributed to his daily care. Through it all she saw the positive impact that her brother had on the world and those around him. He has taught Hannah to see the world differently, making her more compassionate, understanding, and patient.
Hannah has also been a part of the Junior Spartans Basketball program since the third grade and was on the varsity State Championship runner-up team this past year. She is an active member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Best Buddies program, Redgen, and is currently leading Principles Cabinet alongside her work with Unified Sports! She has also been volunteering with the Special Olympics WI Youth Activation Committee, and has even received a Certificate of Commendation from the Elmbrook School Board for her leadership and commitment to her work in starting Unified Sports!
"I am continually inspired by the positive impact that Unified Sports has had on our school and community... I want more schools to know and share in that experience!"
Join us in celebrating Hannah as our Superhero of the Week! You can hear her story on The Varsity Blitz show this Saturday at 10:00 am on The Big 920 and your iHeart radio app!
