Electrical Box Upgrade in Wauwatosa, WI

Fuse panels are an electrical fire waiting to happen: Don’t take the risk

Fuse panels are really old technology. The original patent for the first fuse panel was taken out by Thomas Edison in 1885. Now, we don’t think you have an electrical panel in your home that’s nearly 134 Years old. However, if you live in an older home chances are you have an older model.

The fuse panel, like every other piece of technology, has been upgraded with modern advances over time. However, they haven’t been used in new construction since the early 1960s. Knowing that information alone, you will probably be able to determine whether or not your electrical box is outdated.

If your home is 50 years old or older and you have never upgraded your service panel, then chances are you need a new one. At the time when fuse panels were being used in homes, there weren’t very many high-tech appliances in use. But in today’s world, every home is equipped with advanced technology that old fuse panels just can’t handle.

Besides your home being older, if you notice flickering lights or arcing (an electrical sound coming from inside the unit), then you really shouldn’t wait any longer. Arcing is a surge in electricity that can send incorrect voltages around your house. This means that appliances you have will not function if they get too little electricity, or overload and become a fire hazard if they get too much. It’s not worth the risk.

In addition to having a circuit breaker that will be able to handle multiple electronic devices at one time without overloading, upgrading your service panels has other advantages, too.

Benefits of new circuit breaker box

  1. Safety: With an old service panel, you run the risk of a fire in your home.
  2. Higher resale value: Homes that have a circuit breaker, opposed to an old fuse panel, are more appealing to potential buyers.
  3. Insurance incentives: Having a fuse panel is just an electrical fire waiting to happen. Insurance companies will think that, too, so you don’t want to not be covered because of an old fuse panel.
