4 Tips for Electrical Safety in Milwaukee

Fall is here, and electrical safety in Milwaukee is more important than ever. With the temperatures beginning to dip and the chances of storms heightened, it’s important to take the proper safety precautions to ensure you and your family remain safe and sound this season. The American Burn Association reports that 400 deaths and 4,400 electrical hazards occur each year in the United States due to electrical hazards. These numbers are staggering, and it’s best you do whatever it takes to avoid becoming another statistic.

At Current Electric, we value your safety more than anything, and our team of electricians remain dedicated in keeping all of our customers safe. We offer repair, replacement, and installation on several of our electrical services so all of your needs are met. In fact, our electricians are always around to give you advice on how to keep your home safe!

Electrical Safety in Milwaukee: Top 4 Tips

Looking for a few easy ways to keep your home safe this fall? Then here are 4 safety tips from our Milwaukee electricians:

  1. Flashlights with Full Batteries.  Flashlights will be your go-to during a blackout, as you’ll need them to safely get around the house.  However, many people often leave their flashlights scattered around the home, or they don’t have enough batteries to power up their flashlights.  Keep an emergency flashlight in every room in the home where it can be easily accessed.
  2. Fire Extinguishers.  Make sure that your home is stocked with fire extinguishers, especially in areas of the home where your chances of an electrical fire are highest (for example, laundry room, basement, kitchen, etc.).  If it’s been some time since you’ve replaced your fire extinguisher, give the fire department a call: most will replace yours for free.
  3. Radio.  When your neighborhood is plunged into darkness, it’s important to provide yourself with a means to communicate with the outside world.  A radio can keep you informed of the latest news, which can help you plan ahead accordingly.  For example, if the blackout occurred as a result of severe weather, listening to the radio can help you determine if you need to evacuate.  Make sure to replace the batteries in your radio on a regular basis.
  4. Cover Electric Outlets: If you have young children or pets who are naturally curious, it’s best to keep electric outlets covered. Plastic closures are the most common form of covering and can be installed tightly so they can’t be removed. This reduces the chances of electric fires and electrocution, guaranteeing safety for everyone!
